Stefanie Denz
Stefanie Denz is an artist, educator and art therapist living on an Island on the west coast of Canada. Her practice includes drawing, painting, installations and collaborative movement. Stefanie is interested in space, bringing three dimensionality to her surfaces, and the sensibilities of the exchange between the different areas.
Stefanie is drawn to inner processes and how they become visible and more known through relationships. Her work is narrative, and can include family members, friends, local landscapes, filmography, dreams and architecture. She is inspired by feelings and sensations that are elusive yet familiar, and lie in the construction of the space. The presence of things meeting with the presence of other things including the space, composes the atmosphere. She sometimes includes found material for its tactile otherness and as projections into the viewer's space. She is concerned with the female experience, social roles and how that resonates in the world. Stefanie is curious about how things influence each other physically, emotionally and spiritually, and the potentials in that. She considers her architecturally focused pieces structures of feeling.
Stefanie received her MFA, University of Auckland (89), on full Commonwealth Scholarship, She later went on to get a BEd from Vancouver Island University and an Art Therapy Certification from Vancouver Art Therapy Institute. She is a Canada Council (1999, 2003), BC Arts Council (2010), Saltspring Arts Council (2009, 2021) recipient, and attended artist residencies in Berlin 2013 (Takt) and 2014 (Transart Institute). Stefanie is a member of DVOT (Dwellings, Vertebrae and Other Tales) a collaborative movement group. She facilitates an art drop-in for marginalized people in her community and works as an Art Therapist at Ravensview Treatment Centre.
