Bert de Muynck

Bert de Muynck [Belgium, 1977] is an architect, writer, lecturer and co-director of MovingCities. He holds a MA Architectural Engineering [Catholic University Leuven, BE] and a GAS Cultural Sciences [Free University Brussels, BE]. He is a prolific public speaker, writer and has lived and worked in Amsterdam [NL, 2001-06], Beijing [2006- 09], Shanghai [2009-2018] and is now based in Lisbon.

He was a Lecturer at the Department of Architecture at the Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University [Suzhou, China, from 2015 to 2018], and an assistant professor at the University of Hong Kong – Faculty of Architecture [HKU Shanghai Study Center, from 2011 until 2014]. He was a guest lecturer at the China Academy of Art, Department of Architecture [Hangzhou, 2012-15].

MovingCities is a Lisbon-based flexible entity investigating the role that architecture and urbanism play in shaping the contemporary city.

Established in 2007 in Beijing, by architects Bert de Muynck [Belgium] and Mónica Carriço [Portugal], and operating from Shanghai between 2009 and 2018, MovingCities publishes, collaborates, talks and walks, consults, instigates, organizes and adapts.

Since its inception, MovingCities conducted research, lectures, creative and urban consultancy and workshops in China, Israel, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Finland and Indonesia...

MovingCities developed working relations with various universities and international design and architectural institutes and foundations. Amongst others, has set-up programs in/with China, for the Netherlands Architecture Institute, the Dutch Design Fashion and Architecture, the Finnish Association of Architects and the Museum of Finnish Architecture.

Part of the 14th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia [2014], prof. Marino Folin & MovingCities curated “ADAPTATION - architecture and change in China”, exhibiting new work by 11 Chinese contemporary architecture offices. The exhibition was held at Palazzo Zen a cultural venue of EMGdotART Foundation, in Venice, Italy.
