This workshop is a call for a safer space for “dangerous” conversations and will provide a theoretical framework and practical exercises for exploring art criticism as inspiration.

We will look for the discursive momentum in discussing controversial current exhibitions in Europe and draw from Benjamin and Adorno´s dialectical perspectives on Kritik – as both social critique and art criticism.

How does art function in late-state capitalism? How can we inhabit our mind-body – informed by concepts of systems theory and polyvagal theory – to learn to lean into criticism while allowing our uniquely weird ways of thinking, sensing, being and making to stick around?

By applying Lerman’s critical response process we will shape constructive dialogues about our current works-in-practice with the intention of building a stronger work of art.

The workshop will be supported by Laura Hicks as an expert on the Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process.

ARTISTS FOR DISABILITY JUSTICE WORKSHOP
WITH REN LOREN BRITTON

MELT (Ren Loren Britton & Iz Paehr)

Image Description: Rituals Against Barriers poster has a series of wedge shapes (shoes, door stoppers, ramps) with information about rituals that refuse compulsory able-bodiedness and make space against foreclosures that disabled people face every day.

This workshop traces frameworks of disability from the medical to the social to disability justice (DJ) perspectives. Disability Justice as a framework upholds, makes space for and celebrates all non-normative bodies and minds. From DJ as a framework we will together move through some artists who are engaging with themes that question ableism and make access for all. Following the disabled artists work that we will discuss, we will engage with some access practices like: collective conditions, pronoun rounds, visual self descriptions, sharing access needs, access rider writing, access copies, experimenting with writing alt-text and image descriptions.

Accessibility Infos: This workshop will be held on Zoom, automatic closed captions will be enabled and an access copy will be shared in the event. All additional access information that would make your participation possible is welcome to be shared ahead of time and we will make your access possible.
