Admissions and Partnership Development
Steve Dutton is an artist and occasional curator who works on both collaborative and individual projects. He is currently developing a new solo body of work under the working title of “the phantom industry” which includes drawings, sound works, animations, objects and texts. His work moves between various media, materials, processes and forms but it might be said to be a form of language-based practice which focuses on acts of reading, speaking, writing and drawing.
In the past he has worked closely with Steve Swindells (Dutton and Swindells) since 1998, prior to which he was one half of the collaboration of Dutton and Peacock. Individual and collaborative projects have been exhibited throughout the UK and internationally, including The Stag and Hound at PSL in Leeds UK for which Dutton and Swindells were nominated for the Northern Art Prize and as co-curator for Possession(1) for Bangkok Arts and Culture centre. He has been published in the Journal of Studies in Theatre and Performance, The Journal of Writing in Creative Practice and the Journal of Visual Arts Practice along with many contributions to numerous magazines and publications including recently Fieldnotes and Soanyway.
Steve was a Professor of Fine Art at Bath Spa University UK, where he was the lead on Artistic Research and the Art Higher Degrees tutor for the School of Art, Design, Film and Media up until April 2022. Prior to Bath Spa he held Professorial Positions in Contemporary Art Practice at the University of Lincoln in the U.K, and Coventry University before which he was a Reader in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University.
