New Student Faq
Registration
+ I’ve paid my deposit, what’s next?
After we receive your deposit, you will receive an auto confirmation receipt. Then you will receive an invitation to register with Transart Institute by submitting additional documents (i.e, your student profile, signing up for residency, making your first tuition payment, confirming advisor preferences, etc). The registration form and tuition payment is due by May 1st.
+ Do I need to complete registration with LJMU?
After you have paid your deposit we will be in touch initially with information on how to register with Transart. We will then let you know when to begin the LJMU application process in a separate email. This part of the process will normally take place in June.
+ When will my Student Profile be uploaded to the Transart website?
You will submit your student profile when you register with Transart. We upload student’s profiles for the upcoming year in July.
+ When does the program start?
The program starts in September. All incoming students are welcome and encouraged to join the Summer residencies in July. An introductory meeting to meet your peers in the program will be coordinated for early July.
Residencies
+ Where can I find information on residencies and express my interest in attending the July residency?
You can find dates and links related to upcoming residencies on the Calendar page at the top of the website. Check back regularly as new program details will be uploaded as plans are confirmed. If you have any questions about residencies, contact Laurie at projects@transartinstitute.org
To register to attend upcoming residencies please fill out the Summer Residencies Registration form as soon as your travel plans are confirmed and by May 1st at the latest (incoming students).
+ Can I attend residencies virtually?
In general, in-person residency programming is not available for virtual participation. In some cases there may be specific sessions which may be available for virtual participation during an in-person residency. This will be announced prior to each residency and determined on a case-by-case basis.
+ Can I bring my family/partner/friends to residencies?
We strongly recommend you attend residencies solo where possible. Your days will be very full with activities and programming which leaves little time for family and partners which can add stress to your experience. The intimate quality of time spent at residencies is distinct to virtual encounters. Bonds are formed in person, in workshops and cafes, in collaborations and mutually shared experiences. We are away from our jobs, families, and everything familiar, navigating the unknown and the unexpected and given a precious opportunity to spend time focussing solely on our praxis, to gain new perspective and fresh inputs and insights in our process.
Supervisors
+how do I choose my supervisors?
You will nominate possible supervisors in your EOI. These are suggestions only. Nominating supervisors in your EOI is not a confirmation of your selection.
We will review your proposal and in some cases make other suggestions. In May-June you will receive further information on suggested supervisors and information on how to contact suggested supervisors to set up an initial meeting.
Initial meetings with potential supervisors are opportunities to assess if there is a connection and if the proposed advisement can support your goals in the program. It’s recommended that you consider your goals and how you think a particular advisor can support you so that you can have a frank discussion and make an informed decision.
When it’s been established which two TT supervisors you will be working with, you’ll confirm your selection with Cella. You will then set an initial meeting with both TT supervisors. This meeting must take place before July 25th. This initial meeting is intended to give you a space to define how you wish to work with your advisors (ie; meetings with both supervisors or separately; meeting schedule etc.).
Your LJMU Director of Studies/Chair Supervisor will be in place by September at the latest, and often sooner. We have some input into this process, but it should be remembered that the key expertise for your project will be provided by your TT supervisors.
+When do I start meeting with my supervisors?
Formal supervisory team meetings begin in September and normally take place monthly after that. Until the Program Approval process is completed (approximately three months after Registration) we suggest that you meet with your full Supervisory team collectively. Please add summaries of all supervisory team meetings to LJMU’s eDoc portal so they can be signed off by your team.
Intensives sessions
+ When can I start attending weekend intensives?
You will begin attending Weekend Intensives in September.
You are welcome to join public talks and sessions before officially commencing in September. See Public Talks.

+ How do Sharing Practices Groups work?
At the summer residency, you will be assigned to your Sharing Practices Group and have your first meeting. Starting from September, each group will self-organise to meet once a month. Each month a different person will present work in progress to the group for feedback. We encourage you to share work you have questions about, are stuck on or could use feedback on. Make the process work for you. 3-4 days prior to the meeting, the person who is presenting will send a link/s to their Creative Research Journal indicating what they would like the group to review. Everyone reviews the work and during the meeting offer feedback, responses, questions etc.
