Translation(s)

A new article by Dr Zoran Poposki FRSA, Transart PhD supervisor and alum, examining the role of translation in contemporary art was recently published in Leonardo, a top journal from MIT Press.

The paper explores translation as both motif and method through a case study of the exhibition series Translation(s), curated by Dr Zoran Poposki FRSA in collaboration with Laurence Wood. The curatorial project featured video art by more than 30 artists worldwide, including works by a number of Transart faculty and alumni. Key themes examined in the article include: How artists engage with complexities of communication and interpretation through translation; Translation's transformative potential across languages, cultures and artistic practices; Translation as a process transcending linguistic barriers; The role of curation in conveying artistic interpretations.

By analyzing this unique global exhibition of video works over 5 years, the article provides new perspectives on translation in the contemporary arts.
