The live performance lecture will be followed by a conversation with Nontobeko Ntombela, independent curator and lecturer at Wits School of Arts, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

The performance presents a moving and fluid notion of monument-making-as-history-writing. Spanning across multiple sites, bodies, and geographies, this process of recollection - of names, historical events, and stories - navigates the “architecture” of Zoom through visual and sonic manipulations of space, time, and distance. Here, the physical body is uprooted and unplaced, existing in-between presence and invisibility. This, as a strategy, allows for speaking to and with bodies that have been historically rendered invisible. The overall intention is not to relive a painful past, but rather to allow gaps for self-orchestrated "returns" in the present day.

Donna Kukama is a transdisciplinary artist and creative researcher whose practice presents institutions, books, monuments, gestures of protest, and economies that are as real as they are fictitious. Her practice takes on an experimental form, shifting between performance, video, text, sound, and multimedia installations, with the aim to subvert how histories and value systems are constructed. She has exhibited and presented performances at several major international institutions, Biennales, and museums. She was a guest professor at the HBK Braunschweig (2019-2020), and has been a lecturer at the Wits School of Arts (University of Witwatersrand) Department of Visual Arts since 2011.
