According to Malcolm Gladwell, “the tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire.” In m3’s exhibition, Tipping Point, conceptualized before the coronavirus pandemic arrived in Berlin, the participating artists Katja Hommel, Karin Kerkmann, kate-hers RHEE, and Aleks Slota express various creative positions that confront that precarious moment when the reaction after the trigger is not yet set in stone.
Katja Hommel's photographs show images of places that seem to rest in themselves, but at the same time suggest an almost imperceptibly threatening atmosphere in which everything seems to tip over in the next moment. Representing a quasi floating state, the watercolor series by Karin Kerkmann engages with the tipping point as the moment of transformation and transition. It is where seemingly inanimate matter comes to life; the beginning of a metamorphosis. kate-hers RHEE’s works both deal with the concept of death and what remains in the aftermath of loss, and the overlapping urges for collecting, coveting and memorializing. Aleks Slota contemplates the moment when self isolation caused by the current pandemic can either lead to insanity or “super sanity,” presented through seven performances.
