PhD1 workshop

“Ethical approval? But I’m an artist!”” - Demystifying research ethics for arts-based research
with mark roughley

This session will introduce you to LJMU Research Ethics and Governance processes. This includes a discussion of what LJMU defines as ‘Minimal’ ‘Low’ and ‘ High’ risk research studies and what ethics process to follow for your own studies depending on its level of risk. We will take a look at some previous arts-based ethics applications, play a game, and have time to ascertain if you need ethical approval for your own research studies.

Ethical quandaries and the artist researcher
with Dr. Sarah Bennett

This session will starting with an initial overview of why an understanding of ethical protocols (and how to apply for ethical approval) can be valuable to artist researchers. Following from this Dr. Sarah Bennett will share two case studies based on her own supervisory experience (with the agreement of past students).

The group will then be divided into smaller groups and given a different hypothetical scenario to work on before reporting back to the whole group.

Developing the Context of your Research and Practice
with john byrne

Following on from Session 1 ‘Project Proposals as Active forms of Research and Practice’ this session will offer opportunities to continue reflecting upon and reviewing individual relationships to, and uses of ‘research and practice’.

A dynamic series of short, workshop, feedback, planning and feedfowrad sessions will also give participants an opportunity to reflect upon and review their own current ‘research as practice’ projects and, subsequently, to plan for short term points of publication, discussion and review which will help to develop the momentum and ambition of their overall project production for their MFA in Creative Practice.

PhD workshop

Locating Methodologies- Research Training
with marc herbst & Michelle Teran

Methodologies are the tools of our trade. They are the thing that gets us where we want to go, to learn what we want to figure out.

With playfulness and wonder, this workshop aspires to explore ways of knowing and working so that by the course's end, we will all appreciate the many ways we can ask questions and come to approach answers.

How to prepare for your Viva
with DR. Michael bowdidge, DR. AlLison geremia & Dr. lisa osborn

This short workshop aims to prepare PhD students entering their third year of study for the Viva Voce examination (which typically happens two to three months after submission of your thesis).

We'll be looking at the various aspects of the Viva Voce process and aiming to gain an understanding of its function, and how best to prepare for this milestone and what you can expect on the day.

We'll also be discussing and sharing a tried and trusted toolkit of hints, tips and hacks that are designed to help you feel confident, well-prepared and 100 % ready for your Viva, and also giving you a bit of a glimpse of what a real Viva looks, sounds and feels like.

Planning your Research and Practice – Using Goal Setting and Timelines as Fluid Tools for Change
with john byrne

Project Planning is, more often than not, seen as the ‘thing’ that can kill creativity. After all, how can you know at the beginning of a long-term research and practice project what you are going to do? However, this session will argue that setting clear, focused and achievable aims and objectives can act as a means to enhance and expand the range, focus and effectiveness of research and practice project.

Through a series of discussion, planning and feedback/feedforward workshops, this session will provide participants with an opportunity to creatively plan their research and practice projects forward to (and beyond) the duration of their MFA in Creative Practice, to align these to creative goals and ambitions, and to ‘think back’ from this point to identify what the next, small and concrete steps for achieving these goals might be.

Cocina CoLaboratorio - the Metabolism of transdisciplinary agencies

A talk about the role of creative practice to bring different knowledges around the kitchen table, which are crucial for the understanding and transformation of our food systems. This talk will be to share the story of the project, some tools, experiences, and concepts that we work with as a transdisciplinary team touching upon some examples within our work.

Mariana Martínez Balvanera is a spatial and social designer based in Amsterdam and Mexico City, working in the realm of community lead urban and rural placemaking projects within the critical spatial practice approach. In 2018 Mariana co-founded Cocina Colaboratorio where she has since been leading creative programming in public space aimed at environmental and social sustainability, using food as main common ground.

Cocina CoLaboratorio (CoLaboratory Kitchen) is a transdisciplinary collective that gathers creatives (artists, designers, architects), farmer communities, scientists and chefs around the kitchen table to exchange knowledge, design and take action towards sustainable food futures. A test ground for ideas that conciliate land restoration, food production and better livelihood in rural and rurban areas.
