flying by pluto: ASTRO-ANIMATION WORKSHOP
with laurence arcadias
Embrace the wonder of celestial exploration through this astro-animation workshop! Regardless of artistic experience, this session will unleash your creativity to celebrate the beauty of Pluto.
Journey with New Horizons: Dive into the short film from NASA's flyby of Pluto. I will provide sheets of stills from the film, inviting you to "augment" them with your unique vision using markers, crayons, or any tool that sparks your imagination. Witness your individual contributions come together as we photograph each frame and weave them into a collective animation. Share your thoughts and experiences through a before and post-workshop survey.
goals
Explore and appreciate the wonders of celestial exploration, particularly focusing on Pluto.
Foster a sense of collaboration and community as participants contribute their unique visions to create a collective animation.
Enable participants to reflect on their experiences and thoughts before and after the workshop through surveys.
schedule
About my own research and how this is related. Fill short survey on phone (3 minutes)
About astronomy: a short intro with slides about Pluto and discussion by Robin Corbet on Zoom (10 minutes)
Animation workshop explanation. What is animation, principles and basic techniques? Show a very short animation example. (3 minutes)
Prints distribution and animation making: add your own marks on each frame of a sequence of images printed from the film on Pluto. (20 min to 1 hour)
Conversation and survey: (this may be recorded) We will discuss and share ideas about the experience and complete second surveys. (10 min)
After the workshop, I will take least 3 hours to reshoot, edit, and add sound to the animation. 5 minute film to be shared with participants later.
Needed Materials
I will bring the film prints and art supplies for this, but participants are welcome to come with their favorite tools.
